Nim: from controls to your first round

Read the aim of Nim, then make your first move. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Look at what changes after your first action. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Take a closer look while playing

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.

The challenge in front of you

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Read that aim before choosing your first action. The example below illustrates a decision.

Making your moves

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

How to use the controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

Work through an example

With heaps of 1, 2 and 3 counters, choose one heap and remove at least one counter from it. You cannot take from two heaps in the same turn. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Look for the relevant detail.

Pay attention to this rule

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
